Alumina-carbon slide gate plates (hereafter called SG-P) are strengthened by the carbon bond developed when a thermosetting resin is impregnated into pores of the SG-P and heated in a reducing atmosphere. This is followed by the impregnation of tar or pitch to reduce residual pores produced by evaporation of part of the thermosetting resin during the heating. The size of gaps among the particles can be minimized by selecting the grain size of each raw material to produce a closest packing state ~(1)), but in this case it is often impossible to achieve complete impregnation.This paper will present the results of an investigation on the impregnation characteristics of SG-P impregnated with a liquid resin having a high carburization rate under the high pressure developed by a cold isostatic press (hereafter called CIP).
