There has lately been a demand for chrome-free basic refractories in place of chrome-based refractories in various kilns, and MgO-C brick has drown attention as a material to meet such demand. Problems with conventional MgO-C brick are carbon pickup by steel and increase in heat loss, which have' resulted in demand for MgO-C bricks of lower carbon contents, Reducing the carbon content, however, may decrease the thermal spalling resistance, which is attributed to carbon's high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion. Our previous report (1st report) presented the development of a low carbon Mg-C brick whose thermal spalling resistance could be made nearly equal to that of conventional Mg-C bricks by adjusting the particle size composition of raw materials and using additives. The present report presents an improvement in the thermal spalling resistance without sacrificing other properties, which was accomplished by dispersing pores in the brick.
