Russian Radwaste: Long-Overdue Legislation Nears Completion

Russia's ecologists have dubbed it"the law we've waited 50 years for," and indeed there is unanimity in the opinion that legislation on radioactive waste is outrageously overdue. With some 550 million cubic meters of low-, medium- and high-level radioactive waste (radwaste), and an approximate 4 mil-lion-5 million cubic meters of new waste produced every year, Russia has a phenomenal amount of catch-up work to do. And the proposed legislation does not even include spent fuel from Russia's 32 reactors.
