ON THE OCCURRENCE OF INTERMEDIATE LOCAL MINIMIZERS THAT ARE NOT STRONG LOCAL MINIMIZERS

Recently, it has been shown by Mordukhovich that certain necessary conditions of optimality in Control Theory are satisfied at ''intermediate local minimizers'', in addition to strong local minimizers. It is of interest to know then whether the class of intermediate local minimizers differs from that of strong local minimizers. We give examples, illustrating that the two concepts of minimizers are indeed distinct, and also distinguish intermediate minimizers of different rank. We also extend the class of necessary conditions which are known to be satisfied at an intermediate local minimizer. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. [References: 7]
