Intravesical chemotherapy for superficial bladder cancer

Superficial bladder cancer is common in men and women, and particularly prevalent owing to its high recurrence rate. In the Netherlands in 2000 there were 5,650-8,050 cases of superficial bladder cancer, and 1,200 new patients with invasive disease. These estimates are similar to those for other common tumor types such as colon, lung, skin and prostate cancer; breast cancer is 1.5 times more frequent. In light of the increasing incidence of bladder cancer, especially among women, this malignancy is an important contributor to the costs of healthcare.
