Controlled acid hydrolysis ofpolymeric chondroitin sulfate of bovineorigin afforded in good yield a basicdisaccharide fragment that was usedfor the first time as a starting materialfor the expeditious preparation of a setof building blocks that in turn act asversatile synthons for the efficient and stereocontrolled construction of a col-lection of size-defined chondroitin olig-omers (from di- to octasaccharides).This step economy process allows theirpreparation as reducing species, fittedwith a fluorophore, or as biotinylatedconjugates; all useful tools for thepreparation of microarrays, or asprobes for the study of the biosynthesisof chondroitin sulfate.
