The authors retrospectively reviewed pathologic outcomes in 574 radical prostatectomy specimens of patients who underwent preoperative prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with phased-array body coil. Their primary objective was to evaluate the predictive value of MRI, prostate biopsy, and both tests combined to determine laterality of disease. They also reported the predictability of MRI with respect to the presence of extra-capsular extension and seminal vesicle invasion. Urologists continue to struggle with predicting prostate cancer outcomes using pretreatment variables, such as clinical stage, Gleason score, and biopsy core volume. Laterality of disease alone is not helpful in operative planning.
