We read the article by Zekey et al with great interest. The authors, in their study, based on the urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lypocalin (NGAL) levels, have concluded that shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) does not cause kidney damage either in acute period or up to 3 months after SWL. However, it is a well-known fact that all patients develop acute renal injury after SWL in the form of hema-turia because of the rupture of blood vessels and tubular injury in the form of mild tubular necrosis regardless of the type of lithotripter used. Detailed morphologic studies have proven this fact and this has also been highlighted by the authors in the discussion. NGAL is a regulatory protein for tubular regeneration and after any form of tubular injury level increases in serum and urine.
