PATRIOT struggle comes to a head

President Roberts and nine other UMWA rank-and-file members and leaders were arrested Jan. 29 outside the entrance to the international headquarters of Peabody Energy in St. Louis, Mo., while protesting Peabody's shift of its retiree health care obligations to now-bankrupt Patriot Coal. The arrests took place after some 800 UMWA members and their spouses, as well as other trade unionists and supporters from the St. Louis area, marched from the nearby federal bankruptcy court, which was holding its first hearing on the Patriot case.
