Who is responsible for Patriot's bankruptcy?

I would like to speak out about who's to blame for Patriot's bankruptcy. Peabody Energy created Patriot Coal and gave Patriot all its pension and long-term health care obligations to current and future retirees. Seeing that Peabody is the largest coal company in the world, why did they do that? Could it be that Peabody didn't want to obligate itself to honor the contracts it had signed with the union?
