On Nov. 18, hundreds of UMWA, family and community members came to remember the victims of the Farmington #9 explosion that took place on Nov. 20,1968, at the memorial outside of Mannington, W.Va. Seventy-eight miners tragically lost their lives that day, 19 of who are still entombed in the mine. This disaster led to the passage of the landmark 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. President Roberts was the keynote speaker addressing the crowd.
