In summary, the present results show that the high-spin [22] grid-type complex 1 operates as a magnetic nanoprobe monitoring hydrogen-bonding ability. It also allows the detection of small perturbations around a magnetic center, and furthermore provides the possibility to manipulate magnetic features through H-bonding. Given that the signals observed lie well outside the normal diamagnetic region, grid 1 could be of use as a sensitive probe for (overall) H-bonding interactions with large, complex molecules presenting very complicated spectra. In addition, it is clear that the properties of the paramagnetic grid itself are strongly dependent on its local environment and that this dependence may include spin-state changes, suggesting possible implementation in externally triggered multistable magnetic nanodevices.
