Comparison of properties of ammonium nitrates used for production of fertilizers and explosive materials

Samples of NH4NO3 used in agriculture and for prodn. of explosives as well as samples of explosives produced from the NH4NO3 samples (optionally stored for 2 years) were studied by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The samples showed some differences in structure and properties. The samples used for prodn. of explosives had many fractures on the cryst. surface.
