The return of the least terns...

About the Ides of March each year, I become a self-appointed sentinel, looking expectantly for the return to our beach of migrating least terns. Leaving the Mississippi gulf coast around the middle of August on their autumn migration flight southward,the sleek, little shorcbirds normally return the latter part of March or the first week in April. Their return date is not as precise as that of the swallows' reappearance at Capistrano.
