Reaching a diagnosis in cases of bovine abortion can be frustrating with a diagnosis being made in less than 20% of cases. Submission of a full range of samples from a number of affected animals will increase the probability of identifying a specificcause of abortion. Care needs to be taken when interpreting maternal serology as this provides evidence for exposure but not causation. Multiple agents may be causing abortion on a property and some may be easier to control. Interactions between the pathogen and maternal and fetal immune response should also be considered when determining the significance of diagnostic results.
