Natural ventilation in cattle buildings is critical to ensure a comfortable, productive environment for the dairy cow. Correct building design is essential to ensure adequate ventilation, which will in turn lead to:the removal of excess heat; the removal of excess water vapour; the removal of micro-organisms, dust and gases; uniform distribution of air; the correct air speed for the type of stock within the building. Natural ventilation is the least troublesome, most efficient and least expensive system for providing an optimum environment within a building. The objective of the ventilation system must be to provide a continuous stream of fresh air to every housed animal at all times of the day or night. It should be noted that detailed ventilationdesign is beyond the scope of this article which deals with general principles of ventilation. Specialist help is available from a number of sources to provide site-specific recommendations.
