The son of one our clients recently returned home after completing his degree course at agricultural college and was soon given charge of the dairy herd but quickly realised that he had inherited a mastitis problem. He was disappointed at the complacent attitude his father had been taking towards the number of clinical cases of mastitis and was determined to reduce the problem and asked for veterinary advice. The first steps of our investigation involved: looking at the cows - to see what kind of body condition they were in; looking at the housing provided for them; familiarising ourselves with the way the dairy enterprise was run; examining any on-farm records available to evaluate the extent of the problem; examining the practice treatment recordsfor drugs supplied for mastitis treatment.
