A new type merit formula was introduced in the January proof run - the proofs will now be thrice yearly instead of quarterly. The Type Merit formula has been rewritten to reflect industry changes and is the biggest overhaul for a number of years. Thenew formula will more accurately reflect health, welfare, balance and longevity in the dairy cow although the ultimate measure of profitability has not been ignored. The main emphasis of the new formula is on functional type - udders, feet and legs. Themammary system now comprises 40% of the total score with feet and legs at 30%. The remaining 30% is made up of the body traits with less emphasis now on stature and angularity and more emphasis on chest width and rump width. So the breakdown is currently as follows (the same for UK and International bulls): 40% Mammary; 30% Legs and Feet; 30% 'Goal Trait' of Longevity - calculated using Stature, Angularity, Body Depth, Chest Width, Rump Angle and Rump Width.
