Malassezia dermatitis and otitis externa are encountered on a day-to-day to basis in general practice. The species responsible is usually the nonlipid dependent yeast M. pachydermatis, which is a common commensal of canine and feline skin, ear canalsand mucous membranes. Occasionally M. sympodialis, M. globosa and M. furfur have been isolated from cats, although these and other lipid-dependent yeasts, such as M. obtusa and M. restricta, are more likely to be found on human skin.
