A large number of skin diseases can present with crusting as a major clinical sign. However, crusting is not a diagnosis or specific for certain conditions in cats. Therefore a thorough history and careful general and dermatological examinations are essential in order to diagnose the underlying disease correctly and manage the case adequately. Treatment should be aimed at the underlying disease but topical therapy facilitating the removal of the crusts and resolution of potential secondary infections are also often needed.
