Hebrides wind farm opposition mounts

Opposition is mounting to the construction of the UK's largest wind-farm, proposed for the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Lewis Wind Power is a joint-venture company formed by British Energy and Amec, the UK energy conglomerate. It has plans to build more than 230 of the tallest wind turbines yet planned on peat moorland in the north of the island. The 720MW development would be the UK's largest wind-farm, and the developers claim that it could meet about 6 percent of the UK's renewable energy targets, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 1.84 mt/yr. The development scheme will be considered by the Scottish Parliament and a final decision on the project is due to be made by Holyrood ministers later this year.
