There are many myths surrounding mastitis in cattle, particularly around Staph. aureus the most important cause of contagious mastitis in the UK. Quite often the simple acceptance of beliefs without good evidence hinders the control of masts on farm from both the veterinary and the farm perspective. Additionally, diseases change and what was true becomes no longer true. This article looks at five of the myths associated with Staph. aureus mastitis and assesses how much reality and science there is behind those commonly held beliefs.
