Fellside gets a transplant

The 168MW combined hear and power (CHP) plant alongside rhe Sellafield nuclear fuel re-processing plant and the former Calder Hall and Windscale nuclear power plants in Cumbria, is to get a retro-fit of new control systems. The CHP plant was built in 1993 and operated as a CCGT power plant during its early days fired by natural gas purchased from British Gas under a long-term interruptible (LTI) tariff. The plant was originally constructed to replace Calder Hall in supplying electricity and steam for the nuclear re-processing plant. When it was commissioned, Calder Hall continued to operate for several years, and the Fellside plant was able to operate near to baseload selling power to Scottish Hydro-Electric and later Scottish and Southern Energy.
