Lugansk region (till 1958 and from 1970 through 1990 -Voroshilovograd region) was established on June 3,1938. It was sectioned from Donetsk region. Lugansk region embraces 4 cities and 28 districts with population of 1,837.0 ths. people. The region is located in the southeastern part of Ukraine in the medium current basin of Seversky Donets river on the way from Don bass to Russia. The territory of Lugansk region covers 26.7 ths. sq. km (4.4 percent of the Ukrainian area) and ranks 11th among all regions of Ukraine. It stretches from South to North for more than 250 km, from West to East - by 190km.
