OLD tyres on UK COAL's muck shifting vehicles are turning into environmentally-friendly playgrounds. Steel radial tyres weighing up to 3.3 tonnes are tough and durable, and with payloads of between 85 and 170 tonnes on six-wheeled earth-moving machines, have an average working life of 5,500 hours. It's their weight, size and composition that creates a dilemma of what to do with them once they've reached the end of the road.
