Safety surfaces!

KELLIMGLEY has seen its surface accident rate reduced dramatically in the last year - and it reckons workmen's inspectors are playing an important part in the safety drive. A combined approach at the West Yorkshire mine is seeing 1-2-3 inspectors join management in regular "walk-abouts" designed to ensure that surface workers know the expectations for safe work performance. And it's these toolbox-type talks on ways to improve a task, job or activity are discussed that are getting results. The talks are kept short and simple and surface maintenance engineer Bob Robinson reckons that it's because health and safety is not simply left to management but is supported by the union appointed inspectors that is contributing to their good performance.
