DEEP MINING

DEEP mine production of three million tonnes in the first half of the year was in line with expectations, but made a loss of 35.9 million pounds - an increase of almost 50 percent on last year, despite producing more coal. DAW MILL produced 1.7mt in the first half, with the mine averaging an output of 65,000 tonnes a week for five months. It produced its two millionth tonne on August 8, to beat its own output record by 12 days. As a result of this improved performance, it is expected the current face will complete production in November, with its replacement available at the turn of the year. The pit has completed 2,700 metres of development, 700 metres more than the whole of last year, and slightly ahead of expectations. The improved performance in both production and development terms, increased operating costs at Daw Mill by around 10 million pounds compared to the same period last year, due to additional materials purchases and increased incentive payments related to the improved performance.
