Quaternary lithostratigraphic units of Northern France: An inventory

Though the lithostratigraphy is fundamental for the geological mapping, this one was not very used in treatment of quaternary deposits on the detailed maps of Northern France. An inventory of lithostratigraphic units is proposed being founded on other bibliography. For every unit are precised the origin of the name and the reference of studies which have completed its description and its chronostratigraphical interpretation. In the marine-estuarine sediments are distinguished the Flanders Formation (Holocene), the Loon (Eemian), Sangatte and Herzeele (Late Middle Pleistocene) Formations and, in the Boulonnais, the Slack and Fart Formations and some otljier (Middle and Lower Pleistocene). The fluvial deposits are gathered into two Formations: Lys and Artois. More detailed is the lithostratigraphy of loess and slope deposits which comprises the Lille and Marly Formations (Weichselian) with their members, beds or complexes, overlying the loess and paleosols of Hainaut Formation (Middle Pleistocene).
