Lvov region is located in western part of Ukraine. It plays an important geopolitical role due to its geographical location, European Union is an immediate western neighbor of the region: state border with Republic of Poland stretches for 278.2 km. Lvov region borders on other regions of Ukraine (Volyn, Rivne, Ternopol, Ivano-Frankovsk, and Zakarpatye regions) from the north to the south. There are 8 interstate freight and passenger checkpoints in the borders of the region. Lvov region possesses ramified transportation system. There are 20 administrative territorial districts in Lvov region. There are 43 towns with 9 towns of regional submission. City of Lvov is the center of the region. It is an important administrative, industrial, and cultural center of Ukraine included into the list of UNESCO world heritage places. Lvov is one of the largest educational centers, as well as a heart of fundamental and subject sciences on the territory of Western Ukraine. Western scientific center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is situated in Lvov.
