Neuropsychiatric Complication of Dengue

TO THE EDITOR: Sir, the recent report on mania and dengue fever is very interesting. Harder et al. concluded that mania was a possible neuropsychiatric complication of dengue fever. In general, it is an interesting question whether psychologic manifestations of dengue exist. According to the recent publication by Wiwanitkit and Wiwanitkit, it was notable that "in Thailand where the highest prevalence of dengue in the world is reported, there are no reports on either psychosis or mania among dengue patients." The important concern is there is still no clarification of the possible clinical patho-biologic mechanism that dengue can lead to a neuropsychiatric problem.
