Enabling chemistry innovation with new SF5 synthons from Air Products

Despite the considerable breadth or applications for compounds containing the SF5 functional group (1, 2) there remains just sporadic accounts of research being done in this area. A contributing factor to the limited research involving compounds containing SF5 is most certainly related to the fact that the key reagents, e.g., SF5Cl and SF5Br, and key SF5 containing synthons, e.g., Ph-SF5, are not widely available commerically. During the past decade, Air Products' strategic focus has included improving the preparation and mode of delivery for the basic reagents SF5Br and SF5Cl as well as providing key SF5 synthons that will enable innovation and development of new materials containing SF5. A short account of recent developments is given in this perspective.
