Epidemiologic evidence indicates that biobehavioral factors such as social adversity, depression, and stress can play a role in cancer progression. In a Cutting-Edge Review, Lutgendorf and Sood (pages 724-730) describe in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies demonstrating relationships between these psychological factors and biological pathways involved in cancer progression. The review highlights the biobehavioral factors that contribute to the cross talk between tumor and host cells in the tumor micro-environment. Effects of stress on host cells such as macrophages are potentially critical for many pathways involved in clinical tumor progression.
