To say the current marketplace is hard to read is a bit of an understatement. In the Southeast and on the Atlantic Coast, power plant inventories have "got to be 100 percent-plus." one transportation source told U.S. Coal Review. "I've heard inventories in the millions of tons level." The decline in Eastern rail shipments, resulting from the high inventories, has been "remarkable of late," a source said. That's all pretty bearish, of course. News from the barge side looks notably different. Terminals on the Big Sandy River have seen inventories dwindle, and it's difficult to find quality coal.
