Petcoke market difficult to read as supply remains very short

If the current petroleum coke market is indeed a "confused" one, as one producer recently asserted, then some of its buyers also are a little befuddled. The producer of Gulf Coast high-sulfur petcoke was recently surprised by a curious inquiry from a potential reseller of pet-coke. When the producer said he had a small amount of petcoke to offer, the would-be buyer replied, "I'll take it as long as there is a refund policy in place." The bewildered producer asked what the buyer meant by such a request. The answer: "It means if I can't sell it for what you sell it to me for, you will refund me the difference." Of course, the producer politely declined, saying "We don't have such a policy."
