These U.S. mines produced more coal than most other U.S. mines

Arch Coal subsidiary Thunder Basin Coal's Black Thunder mine in Wyoming topped all U.S. operations in coal production during 2005 with 87,586,375 tons. Peabody Energy subsidiary Powder River Coal's North Antelope Rochelle mine in Wyoming followed with 82,688,918 tons of production. Three other Wyoming mines - Rio Tinto Americas subsidiary Cordero Mining's Cordero mine at 37,836,811 tons, Rio unit Jacob Ranch Coal's Jacobs Ranch mine with 37,277,820 tons and Peabody Caballo Coal's Caballo mine at 30,532,313 tons - rounded out the top five producers. Other operations in the top 10 were Rio Antelope Coal's Antelope mine (29,953,375 tons), Foundation Energy RAG Coal West's Eagle Butte mine (24,133,324 tons), Arch Triton Coal's Buckskin mine (19,568,058 tons), Foundation Coal West's Belle Ayr mine (19,326,943 tons) and Coteau Properties' Freedom mine in North Dakota (15,007,352 tons).
