Severe Midwest weather impacts Alliant operations; IP&L shuts three Iowa coal-fired generators

Extensive flooding due to several days of heavy rainfall in Iowa forced Interstate Power & Light, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy, to shut three coal-fired power plants - the 72-MW Sixth Street and 185-MW Prairie Creek generating stations in Linn County, and the 143-MW Sutherland station in Marshall County. The Sixth Street plant, which provides power to much of downtown Cedar Rapids, shut down in the early morning of June 12 due to rising flood waters. As a result, the downtown district, which includes about 1,000 IPL customers, was without power and underwent a mandatory evacuation. On June 13, about 16,000 IP&L customers were reported to be without power in the Cedar Rapids and Marion areas.
