Massey addresses latest permit ruling with call for certainty

Massey Energy broke its relative silence April 18 on the subject of its valley fill concerns, reacting to a federal judge's decision to stay parts of his March 23 ruling that rescinded four Massey fill permits (See related articles in this week's edition). Not surprisingly, Massey didn't really break any new ground in addressing the issue. The company said it "was pleased to learn" that U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers had ruled largely in its favor regarding the request for a stay. Massey said it continues to assess the path forward for 2008 and beyond and is evaluating its "many options" to mine coal through surface, highwall and underground mining methods.
