AAR reports November traffic mixed, intermodal up

Freight traffic on the nation's railroads was mixed during November, as intermodal increased and carload freight dropped off from November 2005, according to a December 7 statement issued by the Association of American Railroads. U.S. railroads originated 1,622,455 carloads of freight in November 2006, down 15,255 carloads (0.9 percent) from the same month last year. The railroads also originated 1,182,424 intermo-dal units in November 2006, an increase of 7,648 trailers and containers (0.7 percent) over November a year ago. Of the 19 major commodity categories tracked by the AAR, seven - including coal and coke - saw U.S. carload increases in November 2006 compared to November 2005. Coal carloads were up 27,151 carloads (4.0 percent) to 698,905; while coke carloads increased 9.8 percent (up 2,903 carloads to 32,500).
