Alpha Natural Resources' first quarter met coal shipments were up 37 percent year-on-year to a record 3.6 million tons as the exodus of Appalachian supplies to the steel market accelerated. There are dividends, of course. "Since we last updated Alpha's contracted position in our fourth quarter 2010 earnings release, we have priced approximately 2.6 million tons of metallurgical coal for delivery in 2011," Alpha CEO Kevin Crutchfield said.
