Nebraska dumps coal ash on ice in hopes it speeds melting, prevents flooding: Greens are outraged

While the EPA continues to mull its options about labeling coal ash a hazardous material, the people of Nebraska have voted: It's not. On February 17, a crop dusting plane began dropping ash on parts of the frozen Platte River in Nebraska to try and hasten melting. The idea is the dark ash will absorb the sun's rays - commonly referred to as solar energy -that will break up the ice, and it will float harmlessly down river and prevent flooding.
