Pennsylvania regulator moves to idle coal producing, foundry coke operations

Pennsylvania regulators have moved rather aggressively on two fronts, citing environmental issues in ordering production suspensions both at by a coal producing company and by a merchant foundry coke plant. Citing what it referred to as "persistent illegal mining practices, repeated water quality violations, and an ongoing failure to reclaim mined lands," the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection suspended Lehigh Coal & Navigation's mining activities in Carbon and Schuylkill counties.
