State EPA call could close Ohio's two largest coal mines, whack 11,000 jobs

Two of Ohio Valley Coal's massive Ohio mines are threatened by a state regulator's proposed denial of a new coal preparation refuse impoundment. The existing fill is near its capacity. Ohio Valley Coal's Powhatan Mine No. 6 and American Energy's Century mine both need the new fill in order to continue operations, officials of the companies said. Both mines are owned by Bob Murray. The state Environmental Protection Agency proposes to deny a permit for the new fill.
