Two very senior sources with large coal mining producers offered the same opinion: Significant production cuts will be made inside the next four to six weeks. The end of the year delayed some cuts, one source said. "People didn't want to shut down mines in the fourth quarter because they've got to take a write-off." Companies now are identifying those mines that will be taken down, the source said. Announcements are likely to accompany or parallel earnings announcements, a second source predicted. "The only reason you're not hearing about (decisions) right now is because it's before earnings season," he said. "Unless there's some reason to put it out early, I don't think you're going to see" specific news.
