Arch swings in CAPP met playground, but global financial concerns loom

Central Appalachia led the charge as Arch Coal more than tripled its earnings to 68 cents/share in the third quarter. The showing dwarfed the 19 cents/share Arch had earned in Q3 2007 and beat Wall Street expectations. Looking forward, Arch, bowing to the reality of the global financial situation, reduced its coal demand estimate and thus its full year earnings estimate. But the company still anticipates a record performance.
