Rio Tinto re-launches IPO plans for Cloud Peak Energy; will operate as major PRB producer

It appears Cloud Peak Energy - Rio Tinto apparently abandoning the notion of selling its remaining Powder River Basin mining assets - will become the third largest coal producer in the U.S. and in the PRB, based on 2008 coal production. Wholly owned Rio Tinto subsidiary Cloud Peak Energy filed with the SEC August 12 a new registration statement in connection with Cloud Peak's proposed initial public offering. Cloud Peak comprises most of Rio Tinto Energy America's Western U.S. coal assets and operates two of the five largest coal mines in the PRB. Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley and RBC Capital Markets are joint book-running managers.
