Spa-Typing of community-acquired methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus in southeast of Austria during a six year period from 2002-2007

Within the years 2002 to 2007, the occurrence of CA-MRSA in Southeast Austria clearly increased up to 26% in MRSA isolates, whereas the total number of MRSA was decreasing.Characterization by spa-typing showed 14 different spa types, with varying geographical origin like t008 from USA (USA300 clone) or t019 from the Pacific regions. Nevertheless there was a predominance of the well described European CA-MRSA (t044) strain.
