Cognitive Impairment and Dementia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people,causing many complications. Recent studies have shown alink between diabetes and roild cognitive impairment (Cl) inpersons with earlier onset and greater severity of diabetes.Although the pathophysiology of Cl is multifactorial, there isstronger evidence that lack of glycemic control resulting Inhypo- or hyperglycemia leads to Cl among diabetic patients.With a growing geriatric population and increasing obesitytrends in America, the prevalence of diabetes and therelated Cl, caregiving could be a challenge. Understandingthe predisposing factors and the link between diabetesand Cl or dementia can help improve the quality of lifeof diabetic individuals.
