Soapbox Paul Simpson warns of following quality gurus too religiously

Quality professionals are in danger of becoming trapped in a sterile debate about the best quality thinker and who they should champion to senior managers. We often expect these senior managers to automatically agree with our recommendations that the organisation 'does' Deming or implements Lean, but we must remember that most will only have a superficial knowledge of quality principles and teachings. Few will have read about Deming or be familiar with Ohno's work. As quality professionals, we should not necessarily be encouraging them to read Quality Is Free but should be trying to show them how an organisation-wide quality programme will deliver real business benefit. This has been demonstrated most recently by the CQI/CMI research into the economic impact of quality management.
