摘要

With the enforcement of the Heath and Safety (Offences) Act 2008 in January, senior managers in the UK now face fines of 20,000 pounds and the prospect of two years in jail if they fail to ensure a safe working environment. The harsh new penalties throw into sharp relief the increasing seriousness with which occupational health and safety is taken. Legal ramifications are not the only consequence of poor health and safety. There arc also serious effects upon businesses' day-to-day productivity. The Health and Safety Executive reports that six million working days were lost in the UK in 2007/08 due to injuries at work and more than two million people suffered from an illness they believed was caused or worsened by work. But help is at hand. By implementing an effective health and safety management system businesses can ensure that they are adhering to legislation and lessen the time, and money lost due to injuries in the workplace.
