Sustainability dominates debates over the current and future quality of our built environment. This further cements the centrality of quality professionals in the construction and development sectors and heralds a new era for house builders across the globe. In England, housing shortages have made sustainability considerations of paramount importance, leading to proposals for a series of eco-towns to be developed nationwide. Support for the concept has become politically strong, yet at times controversial with the public. The first five were suggested by then housing ministerYvette Cooper in March 2007 but by March 2008 Birmingham City Council alone had announced plans for five new towns.
